is it better to use microsoft visual 2013 for the tutorials?
i know he uses 2010 but i think its outdated, but will i have trouble following along if i use a newer version?

You will not have trouble following along with the videos if using vs2013/vs2015. The exceptions would most likely be with the locations of the call stack and debug windows, which can be enabled/disabled and moved around.
