I cheesed the fucker by staying right on the very edge where they can't hit you and shooting

Some things that are good to add for shooters are, a blinking animation (invert colors or just have frames where it's not being drawn) and some sound. It's totally changes the feel.

Good work with these games bro, getting the practice in there is important. You got the right idea.
