What is directX?

Hey ive been learning to program in c++ for a few months now and i just started using chilies tutorials to learn directX (btw they are the best!) and im still not sure what direct X actually is... is it a game engine like unreal engine? or is unreal engine like chilies framework and it uses directX?

Directx is not a gaming engine or graphics engine. It is a thing I guess that communicates to your graphic driver that communicates with the video card in your computer. So basicly it is just a thing that allows you to talk to your video card to put pixels on the screen and such. By the way game engines are made using directx well the graphics part at least.
