There are tons of books out there, yes they cost money...
I have found a good author who has created multiple books that covers a wide variety of topics.
I recommend having a good solid knowledge of C++ or at very least a solid knowledge in an object oriented programming language. It will help.
This author has three books I want to point out, Introductions for DirectX 9.0, 10.0 and also a fairly recent one, 11.0. They are great books to use and even cover things such as terrain generation from heightmaps. Anyways...

There's a lot of books online for free too, if you are willing to spend time searching. Along with downloadable material not to mention there are billions of online tutorials making programming books near to useless.
But maybe it's just my greedy ass, the books might be a ton of help.
